The Caruthersville Humane Society with its unique relationship with the City of Caruthersville and a community of supporters and volunteers, has become one of Missouri’s most successfully-run humane organizations. The 6th Annual River Run John VanAusdall Memorial 5K Run/2-Mi Walk has become one of its main fundraisers. The 2007 inaugural event which attracted almost 100 participants was deemed a huge success. The entry fees, donations and corporate sponsorships made up much of the needed annual operating funds. Since the Caruthersville Humane Society is a non-profit organization, operating funds are in dire need once again. We invite runners, walkers, animal lovers and supportive people of all ages to attend.

In 2008, our board unanimously wanted to offer special recognition to a major supporter and friend of CHS. Johnny Van had a genuine love for animals and took extra efforts to make sure that animals got out of bad situations into good ones. Many of us and Caruthersville residents will best remember him by having seen him walk his rescue dog, Benji, up and down Carleton Avenue. Johnny Van Ausdall will be deeply missed among anyone in the animal welfare community but we believe his memory lives on in all of the animal’s lives that he touched.
